Partial dentures are designed to fill spaces between natural teeth for people who are missing teeth in their mouth. When people are missing back teeth, chewing can be difficult and they will try and compensate and chew food with their front teeth causing more damage to their natural healthy teeth. A denture reline involves taking an impression of the patients existing oral tissues (gum and ridge). This procedure is done when a denture no longer fits snugly or becomes loose. This can happen when a person has bone resorption (which happens naturally with tooth loss), teeth removal or has weight gain or loss. A portion of acrylic in the existing denture is removed and replaced with a new layer of acrylic which will reline/refit the denture and create a tighter, better fit. It is highly recommended that your dentures be removed while you sleep at night. Removing your dentures gives your oral tissues (gum and bone) a chance to breathe and your jaw a chance to relax from the pressure of wearing dentures. Taking your dentures out at night can prevent sore spots. You should never wear your dentures for more than a 24 hour period without a proper oral hygiene routine. Bacteria love warm, dark places which can develop under your dentures if not removed daily. Getting new dentures, whatever the type, can take practice and patience to wear. Your tongue, cheeks and lips will be more active while getting used to the idea of having something in your mouth.
